How to Wash Jeans So They Last Longer (and Keep Their Colour)

Washing denim too hot or too often ruins it. The simple routine that keeps your jeans dark, fitted and looking new for years.

Denim doesn't wear out from being worn — it wears out from being washed wrong. Hot water, frequent cycles and tumble drying are what fade the colour, shrink the fit and break down the fabric. Learn how to wash jeans the right way and a good pair will look new for years.

Wash your jeans far less than you think

This is the golden rule: denim experts (and jean makers themselves) recommend washing jeans only every 5–10 wears — sometimes far less. Every wash strips a little colour and loosens the fibres. Air them out between wears and spot-clean small marks instead of washing the whole pair.

Freshen without washing: hang jeans in a steamy bathroom or outside in fresh air to release odours. It revives them without the fade.

The right way to wash denim

  1. Turn them inside out. This protects the outer surface and preserves the colour.
  2. Use cold water. Cold prevents shrinking and dramatically slows fading; hot water is denim's enemy.
  3. Choose a gentle cycle and a mild detergent — skip bleach and harsh formulas.
  4. Wash dark denim separately for the first few washes; new indigo bleeds.
  5. Zip zippers and fasten buttons so hardware doesn't snag the fabric.

Never tumble dry (here's why)

Heat from the dryer is what shrinks jeans and cracks the fibres over time. Always air dry instead — hang them by the waistband or lay them flat. They'll keep their shape and size, and the fit you love won't tighten up after every wash.

Extra tricks for keeping the colour dark

  • Add a splash of white vinegar to the first wash to help set the dye.
  • Dry jeans in the shade — direct sun fades indigo fast.
  • Only wash when they genuinely need it; smell-test before you assume.

Frequently asked questions

How often should you wash jeans?

Every 5–10 wears at most — many people wash far less. Airing and spot-cleaning between washes keeps them fresh without fading.

Should you wash jeans in hot or cold water?

Always cold. Cold water prevents shrinking and keeps the colour dark; hot water fades and shrinks denim.

Can you tumble dry jeans?

It's best not to. Dryer heat shrinks and weakens denim — air dry by the waistband to keep the fit and fabric intact.
